fall 2024
Launched in 2015, Nā Wai ‘Ekolu is a hui of K-12 educators and community members from the Mānoa, Pālolo, and Makiki stream areas. Dedicated to developing stewards who monitor and restore the health of our watershed, this group also collaborates on creating and sharing curriculum while actively working to protect our streams.
This year, our STEMplus focus begins with answering this call of “What do our waters need from us?” Join us as we explore ways that our students and communities can help determine aspects of water quality in our streams, and learn more about community driven approaches to detecting coconut rhinoceros beetles (CRB).

Thank you to everyone who attended our Water Quality workshop! Participants explored methods for measuring temperature and discovered where and when the highest temperatures occur in streams, as well as the factors influencing these conditions. Mahalo nui to hydrologist Yin Phan Tsang from the UH-Tsang Stream Lab for sharing valuable insights on the impact of monitoring water quality on the health of native stream animals and their habitats.
