What We Do
We are currently designing and engineering cages and sensors to help the O‘ahu Waterkeeper raise and cultivate a community of oysters in the Ala Wai Canal in order to filter its contaminated waters. Our safe oyster cages house between 50 and 200 oysters each, and our sensors find data including temperature, conductivity (salinity), and turbidity, in the water around the oysters. This data is transmitted over to the Data page of our website where researchers and the community can view it in real time.
We are supporting the Waterkeeper by providing them with our data and cages while assisting them with their other oyster needs. The Waterkeeper has a goal of improving Hawai‘i’s waterways and building a better, more sustainable future for our islands. They are able to use our data and information to aid other programs and projects that they are working on with hopes to eventually build oyster reefs in the ocean.
We have big plans for our outreach program. We have designed smaller, more portable cages for the public to use. We plan to produce these cages in bulk so that members of our community living near the water can set up their own oyster cages and contribute to the filtration project.
